Groundbreaking and Renaming of Pablo Tac School of the Arts
San Luis Rey Elementary School has been redesignated as Pablo Tac School of the Arts in a ceremony hosted by OUSD’s Board of Trustees. Students, school leadership and community members attended the groundbreaking and revealing of the school’s new logo.
Pablo Tac Elementary School will undergo a full renovation that will touch every aspect of the campus from the classroom to the playground. New buildings will be added and existing structures completely remodeled. “The Board of Trustees would like to thank the voters of Oceanside for passing Prop H which is funding this project and others across the district. Generations of students will benefit from this gift made possible by the community,” said Dr. Stacy Begin, Board of Trustees president.
In June of 2021 the Board of Trustees voted to rename San Luis Rey Elementary School after Pablo Tac, a Luiseño indigenous scholar. Pablo Tac (1820-1841) was from the village of Quechla which is now the San Luis Rey Mission. He was taken to Rome to study and became an international scholar. His writings were the only primary source of Luiseño language and culture at the time.
“The naming of Pablo Tac Elementary School opens the cultural window to the Luiseño people, the land, art and scholarship to the future generations of Oceanside,” said Captain Mel Vernon of the San Luis Rey Band of Mission Indians.
