Health and Human Development Advisory Committee

On May 24, 2016 our board of education adopted curriculum approved by the California Department of Education that will not only meet our legally required compliance with the California Healthy Youth Act, but also provide age appropriate education to our students.

Over the course of the next three months, Oceanside Unified School District will host 4 meetings of the Health and Human Development Advisory Committee. This committee will serve in an advisory capacity. Among other responsibilities, this committee will participate in the editing and revision of the OUSD board-approved Rights, Respect, Responsibility curriculum for middle and high school students. This committee will include instructional staff, support staff, and parents and guardians who have a connection to grades seven through twelve. The application window to serve on this committee will close November 16, 2018.

In the elementary grades, Kindergarten through fifth, sexual health curriculum will remain suspended until the 2019-2020 school year. Following the release of the California Healthy Youth Act’s new standards in May of 2019, we will convene an Elementary Health and Human Development Advisory Committee to review a comprehensive approach to health education. This will include physical education, nutrition, social-emotional well-being, and human development.

Oceanside Unified School District will host opportunities for public review of the revised curriculum. At the appropriate time the district will send out the dates, times, and locations to our community and post the information prominently on our district homepage. Parents will still be able to excuse their children from lessons about comprehensive sexual health and HIV prevention education.

Oceanside Unified School District is committed to continuing its proud history of providing human and health development education for students in grades K through 12 creating a safe and welcoming environment for all students, staff, and family structures.
