Board Policy 5113: Justifiable Personal Absences

“The pupil’s absences have been requested in writing by the parent or guardian and approved by the principal or a designated representative pursuant to uniform standards established by the governing board”, and “the Governing Board directs the justifiable absences under Education Code 48205 shall be granted only for comparable short-term absences (maximum 3 consecutive days), and that they shall not be granted for such purposes as traveling with parents on a vacation or business trip, nor for early starts or late returns from such trips.”

Excused Absence - Compulsory Education Excused - Code E

  • Illness or injury
  • Medical, dental, optometric, or chiropractic services
  • Quarantine under the direction of a county or city health officer
  • Funeral service – immediate family (1 day in California and not more than 3 days outside of California)
  • Precinct board member for an election per section 12302 of the Education Code
  • Jury duty
  • Illness or medical appointment during school hours of a child of whom the pupil is the custodial parent

Justifiable Personal Absence - Compulsory Education Excused - Code P

  • Court appearance
  • Funeral services of someone other than immediate family
  • Religious holiday or ceremony
  • Religious retreat (not to exceed 4 hours per semester)
  • Employment conference
  • Family emergencies
  • Appearance at SARB or SART
