Hot Spot Program Comes to an End
The Broadband Connectivity Program, which provided WiFi hotspots to OUSD students during the COVID-19 pandemic, will conclude on June 30, 2024. This program was established by the San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) in partnership with our school district.
Following Governor Newsom's lifting of the state of emergency on February 28, 2023, and the contract term ending on June 30, 2024, the SDCOE and OUSD will no longer be able to offer the Broadband Connectivity Program (hotspots).
We understand that reliable WiFi access is crucial for student success. Here are some low-cost alternative options to consider:
-
Cox Connect2Compete: This program offers affordable internet to families with a K-12 student enrolled in school and who participate in a government assistance program. There's no credit check or social security number required, making it a convenient option.
-
T-Mobile Project 10Million: Project 10Million is an initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide for students by providing them with free or low-cost internet access. This program includes a free mobile hotspot device, 100GB of mobile data per year for five years (essentially free internet), and the option to purchase laptops and tablets at a discounted price.
-
Comcast Internet Essentials: Internet Essentials has connected over 10 million households for over 10 years to fast, reliable internet. Get speeds up to 50 Mbps for only $9.95/mo — good for online learning.
-
Access from AT&T: provides low-cost internet service for eligible households. WiFi and installation are included. No equipment fees, no contracts, and no deposits.
-
Spectrum Internet Assist: Low-cost In-home WiFi service with no contracts and no data caps.
-
Public Library: Local public libraries are another excellent option for free WiFi access and study spaces.
We are committed to supporting our students. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
