Support for Students Who Are LGBTQ+
OUSD Board Policy Upholds:
Nondiscrimination in Gender Identity
This policy and regulation is meant to advise school site staff and administration regarding a student who is transgender and gender non-conforming in order to create a safe learning environment for all students, and to ensure that every student has equal access to all components of their educational program. (AR 0410.1)
The Board of Education is committed to providing equal opportunity for all individuals in district programs and activities. District programs, activities, and practices shall be free from unlawful discrimination, including discrimination against an individual or group based on race, color, ancestry, nationality, national origin, immigration status, ethnic group identification, ethnicity, age, religion, marital status, pregnancy, parental status, physical or mental disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, gender expression, or genetic information; a perception of one or more of such characteristics; or association with a person or group with one or more of these actual or perceived characteristics. The Oceanside Unified School District is committed to providing a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment for all students, including transgender students, and to ensuring that every student has equal educational opportunities and equal access to the District's educational programs and activities. Each school must ensure that all students, including students who are LGBTQ+, are provided a safe and supportive learning environment that is free of harassment, discrimination, intimidation and bullying. Administrators, faculty, and staff are required to intervene when they witness harassment, discrimination, intimidation and bullying of any student, if they can do so safely. (BP 5157)
Why Wear The Badge?
Encourage staff to publicly identify as supportive LGBTQ+ allies.
Visual display of support lets students know who represents a safe space and that safe spaces are not limited to the classroom.
Staff who wish to participate can wear the badges as long as they’re willing to be someone who:
- will interrupt harassment or correct homophobic/transphobic language;
- is aware of policies/rights that protect LGBTQ+ students;
- students can talk to and provide resources.
- foster an inclusive community
