The Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD) is a proud partner and supporter of Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton (MCBCP). Together, the district and the base are two of the largest employers and most important entities in the Oceanside community.
In an effort to strengthen and maintain this excellent collaborative partnership, and to help benefit the students and families stationed at MCBCP, the district is pleased to provide this Web page as a resource to our military families, particularly during such a challenging global period.
MCBCP is the Corps’ largest west coast expeditionary training facility and one of the busiest installations overseen by the Department of Defense. The base covers more than 200 square miles and provides housing to more than 38,000 military family members. A majority of the base housing units reside within OUSD attendance boundaries.
Each school year, as many as 2,500 military children attend one of three OUSD elementary base schools: North Terrace, Santa Margarita and Stuart Mesa. All three campuses have been named California Distinguished Schools by the State Board of Education, an honor bestowed on only five percent of the state’s schools! Secondary students are provided busing to Jefferson Middle School and Oceanside High School, just minutes from the base.

Military Child Education Coalition Honors OUSD with Pete Taylor Award
The outstanding partnership shared by the Oceanside Unified School District with Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton has earned OUSD the military’s 2009 Pete Taylor Partnership of Excellence Award. The OUSD Board of Education and Superintendent Larry Perondi traveled to Philadelphia, PA to receive the award at the annual MCEC national conference.
“The district is thrilled to receive this prestigious honor,” said Superintendent Perondi. “We are equally happy about continuing the tremendous relationship we share with our military community.”
Established in 2004, the award recognizes outstanding partnerships that exist between military installations and school districts. The award is designed to “foster the sharing of lessons learned and to recognize that goodness starts at the local level.”

Team of Advocates for Special Kids
TASK is a nonprofit charitable organization whose mission is to enable individuals with disabilities to reach their maximum potential by providing them, their families and the professionals who serve them with training, support, information, resources and referrals, and by providing community awareness programs. Legion of Valor Award for OHS Cadet
Kevin Williams, Commander of the Oceanside High School Armed Drill Team Marine Corps Junior ROTC unit has been selected as one of only five cadets nationwide to receive the Legion of Valor Award. A national board tabbed Kevin for this distinguished honor based on his inspirational leadership, academic accomplishments and community service.
Described as a leader, scholar and athlete, Kevin attended the U.S. Naval Academy’s Summer Training Program and plans to join the Academy next fall. He is a member of the National Honor Society and recently became the youngest pilot to receive his solo license at Oceanside Municipal Airport. His long range goal is to become a U.S. Marine Corps jet fighter pilot.
The OHS Marine Corps JROTC program, under the director of Col. Mike Sullivan, was also recognized for the ninth consecutive year as an Honor School.
National Military Honors for El Camino High School MCJROTC Program
Excellence in leadership has landed the El Camino High School MCJROTC program two prestigious awards for both its cadets and instructors. The unit earned the Naval Honor School award for exemplary performance, an award shared by only 20 percent of the nation’s units.
ECHS was selected due to its outstanding overall rating during the 2009-10 academic year. The unit was evaluated on performances during inspections, drill competitions, community service, physical fitness and academic and scholastic achievement.
The group also received the Marine Corps Association Award in recognition of being the only regional unit to receive the Naval Honor School designation. Both awards signify excellence in leadership in a student focused program. The unit is led by Sgt. Gene LaRue and Master Sgt. Mark Coates.
The mission of the MCBCP School Liaison Officer is to coordinate educational support services to maximize opportunities for academic success for transitioning military children/youth. Liaisons foster quality education by working directly with the command, families, school districts and local communities. They also provide referral services to family support agencies aboard MCBCP and in the civilian community. Click 
The Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit, world-wide organization. A model of positive leadership and advocacy, the MCEC’s work is focused on ensuring quality educational opportunities for all military-connected children affected by mobility, family separation, and transition. The MCEC performs research, develops resources, conducts professional institutes and conferences, and publishes resources for all constituencies. Click 
An organization with strong grassroots support, the NFMA is balanced with a solid blend of professionalism.
