Dressed as sea creatures and farm animals, students and teachers at Nichols Elementary School helped act out two famous children’s books, “The Rainbow Fish” and “The Stinky Cheese Man,” during a Tuesday morning performance of Literature Comes to Life.

“The Rainbow Fish” focuses on the joy of giving, while “The Stinky Cheese Man” represents a collection of parodies of famous children’s stories. 

Under the direction of Stacey Wein, the program has presented educational and assembly programs to thousands of preschool, elementary and middle schools for 24 years.  Literature Comes to Life regularly visits more than 175 school sites and libraries throughout the U.S. and Candada each year.

From secretaries to bus drives, custodians to maintenance and grounds workers, all members of the California School Employee Association (CSEA) play a tremendous role in the overall educational experience for public school children.  Services provided by CSEA staff members are invaluable and help ensure the smooth operation of our schools. 

This week, May 19-25, the Oceanside Unified School District joins more than 750 union chapters throughout the state to celebrate Classified School Employee Week.  Please join the district in thanking all CSEA members whose skills and talents play such an integral part in the field of public education. 

All schools and district office sites will be closed on Monday, May 27 in observance of the Memorial Day Holiday.  Campus and offices will resume their normal business hours on Tuesday, May 28.

The district wishes you and your family a safe and enjoyable three-day weekend!

Major League baseball player Nick Hundley and professional soccer player Chiky Luna will serve as the two main guest speakers for the OUSD Men’s Conference Saturday, June 1 at El Camino High School.  The free event aims to inspire fathers and young men to step up their involvement in the educational process and their positions as role models in their homes and in the community.

The free conference will run from 9 a.m. to 12 noon in the ECHS Truax Theatre.  A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.  The conference is open to the public.  Click Men’s Rally for more information.

The next regularly scheduled meeting of the OUSD Board of Education will take place on Tuesday, May 28 at 6 p.m. in the district board room, 2111 Mission Ave.  The meeting is open to the public and includes an opportunity for public comment.

Oceanside High School senior Will Tate has been named a Gates Millennium Scholar by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (GMS).  Will is one of only 1,000 students nationwide to receive this prestigious honor and funding for college.  He is also a member of the 2013 Class of Simon Scholars. 

The GMS Program will award the Class of 2013 Gates Millennium Scholars good-through-graduation scholarships which can be used to pursue degrees in any undergraduate major at the accredited college or university of the recipients’ choice.

 Established in 1999, the GMS Program enables 5,000 students each year to attend and graduate from 800 of the most selective private and public schools in the country, including Ivy League colleges, flagship state universities, United Negro College Fund member institutions and other minority serving institutions.

Raising the bar of student achievement has helped land both Palmquist and Ivey Ranch Elementary schools on the California Business for Education Excellence (CBEE) 2012 Honor Roll.  The high-achieving OUSD schools are part of the 2,108 campuses state-wide to receive this prestigious honor.

“To ensure more of our schools succeed, we must change the conversation from being about fixing failing schools to one that focuses on replicating the success of schools like those on the Honor Roll,” said CBEE Chairman Greg Jones.

Schools honored are recognized for demonstrating consistently high levels of student academic achievement and a reduction in the achievement gap.

The OUSD Kids First initiative is off and running.  Click Kids First  to view the 8 Keys of Excellence, watch student videos and to learn more about this life-changing project and how you can get involved as a partner with the district. 

A new Two-Way Spanish Immersion Program will be available at Reynolds Elementary School beginning this fall.  This unique language-oriented program is designed to build fluency in both Spanish and English.  Native Spanish and English speaking children will have the opportunity to develop their listening, speaking and writing skills in both languages.

A new alternative learning center for high school students is now in place on the campus of Ocean Shores High School.  The center provides a new path for students needing a different course of learning than what is offered at OUSD’s two conventional mainstream high schools.  Click Alternative Learning Center to read more from Wednesday’s Union Tribune feature article.  

The Adult Education Program of the Oceanside Unified School District is providing free classes for individuals looking to learn English as a second language, or those wishing to become U.S. citizens.  Free child care is provided for those attending classes.
